Our family and community

Our family and community

We both grew up in the south suburbs of Chicago, in a community that valued stable families, church, and Christian education. Our parents taught us by example the value of hard work, honesty, and integrity, and made sure we had excellent teachers, some of whom have become lifelong friends. Rob is the youngest of three and Kirstin is the oldest of four. All of our siblings are married with children, totaling seventeen nieces and nephews for us so far, ranging in age from nearly-one up to 26! We’re really enjoying watching these kids grow up and like knowing that our child will have a lot of cousins. Where we live in Three Rivers is about a two-hour drive from where most of our immediate family still lives, so we’re able to visit for holidays and other special occasions and we know our parents will be making more frequent trips our way once there’s a baby in our home. We also look forward to travel adventures to spend time with Kirstin’s sister, brother-in-law, and niece, who live in Idaho.

We ended up in Three Rivers because Kirstin’s grandparents have had a lake cottage here since the 70s. When we moved into the cottage temporarily shortly after we were married, we discovered a wonderful place, rich in history, natural beauty, diversity, art, and spirituality. We are fortunate to have many friends who have become family to us, and our child will have many “aunts,” “uncles,” and “cousins” right here in town, and in many other parts of the country as well. We’re especially thankful as we begin this journey to have friends who can share their wisdom with us from all angles of experience with adoption: as adoptees, as birth parents, and as adoptive parents.
